The Yorktown Teen Center board of directors decided tonight to memorialize one of their own.
The Joan Valenstein Youth Advocate Award will be given annually in the fall to an adult in the Yorktown community who through their volunteerism demonstrates activism in meeting youth needs. Also, the scholarship will be awarded annually to a graduating high school student who is active in community service and is a Yorktown Teen Center member. The decision for the awards was made after discussion and support from the Valenstein family.
Valenstein was a member and driving force of the Teen Center board. She died suddenly last Thursday in a car accident. Valenstein worked tirelessly to keep the Teen Center open for Yorktown teens throughout its evolution.
