BOCES-made bike racks go up around town • 10.29.10
It will be even easier for Yorktown residents to be on the move now that bike racks, designed and built by students at Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES’s Tech Center and commissioned by the town have been installed in several areas around town.
The functional art pieces were placed this week near the track behind the Yorktown Community & Cultural Center, at Town Hall and outside Starbucks and at Railroad Park, both on Commerce Street.
BOCES graduate Alexa Picone of Yorktown created “Chain Reaction,” a sculptural rack that looks as if it could have a place at Storm King. Yorktown’s Sabrina Bababekov, who also graduated in June, brought practicality and art together when she designed her rack around a trash pail.
Plaques will be placed near all the racks, recognizing the students who designed them as well as the students who worked on creating them.
The multicolored pieces were put in place by the Yorktown Parks Department and Highway Department. They were a collaborative effort of the Tech Center academies: Advertising Art and Digital Design students designed the racks, Welding students built them, Carpentry students built the flower box on top of one of the creations, Masonry students cemented the box, and Auto Body students put the paint and finish on them.

Selling Yorktown • 10.29.10
Houlihan Lawrence Real Estate has posted a new video featuring several recognizable local figures extolling the town’s virtues as a place to live, work and play.
Councilman Nick Bianco, Peter Pratt’s Inn owner Jonathan Pratt and John C. Hart Memorial Library Director Patricia Baressi are among those who appear. The two-minute video highlights various locations in town, from the Shrub Oak Deli to the Downing Ballfields and Sparkle Lake.
While it’s clearly a sales pitch for prospective home buyers, it shows the town in its very best light.
