Honoring heroic officers: Editorial
We salute the police officers honored at Thursday’s Westchester County Law Enforcement Memorial Day Service & Awards Ceremony. In particular, we applaud the fortitude of Luigi Osso Jr., the Irvington police officer who was seriously injured in April 2010 when a teen car thief plowed into his police cruiser at the intersection of Broadway and Main Street. We write:
For a while, it didn’t look as if Osso, then 31, would survive; he suffered severe head trauma, a shattered pelvis, broken bones — he was in a coma for days. “It was touch and go for a while,” his wife, Maria Osso, wrote in a letter to the editor last June.
But there he was at the Westchester County Center on Thursday — affable, conversant, using a cane but walking under his own power. …
… All the officers deserve our thanks and appreciation and, in Osso’s case, our continued best wishes. After the ceremony, he was asked how he was getting along. The officer did not pause: he said he was just trying to get back to work.
Edward Hopper: Editorial
We comment on the Saturday opening “Edward Hopper, Prelude: The Nyack Years,” at Hopper House in Nyack. The iconic American realist painter is a native son of Nyack. We write:
Nyack — its people, architecture and environs — often served as muse for Edward Hopper as he developed his distinct American Realist style. Now, the iconic painter’s legacy is being employed to showcase his boyhood home, which now is marking its 40th anniversary as Hopper House Arts Center. The historic artist is worthy of praise, and retrospective. So is the arts center itself. …
