The Yorktown Athletic Club is sponsoring the sixth annual Murphy Youth Lacrosse Tournament in conjunction with the annual Matt Kull Yorktown High School Alumni Game.
The Murphy Youth Lacrosse Tournament was founded in 2006 to honor Charlie Murphy who, along with Jim Turnbull, founded the lacrosse program here in Yorktown. In addition, the Murphy Tournament is a fundraiser for Matthew’s Mission and proceeds from the 2011 Youth Tournament will be donated to the Matt Kull Foundation.
Matt is a former Yorktown Player who passed away from leukemia, and the proceeds help the families of cancer patients at their time of need.
There will be approximately 85 Boys & Girls teams participating in this year’s tournament. The Boys Tournament will be held on Saturday June 11th and the Girls will be held on Sunday, June 12th. The Matt Kull Alumni Game will be held on Saturday, starting at approximately 5pm. In addition, we will host the first annual Yorktown HS Girls Lacrosse Alumni Game and the date and time is TBD.
New this year we will hold youth clinics during the tournament for the Yorktown Boys Mighty Mites Grades K-1 and Pee Wee Grades 2-3 divisions on Saturday and the Girls Pee Wee Division on Sunday. The clinics will be hosted by our sponsor Warrior/Brine Lacrosse.
Between both the Murphy Youth Lacrosse Tournament and the Boys & Girls Yorktown HS Alumni Games we expect to have nearly 3,000 lacrosse fans and players on the grounds each day. This includes over 2,000 Boys & Girls lacrosse players that range in age from our Mighty Mites Age 5 through some of our most senior Yorktown HS alumni players who are age 60 +. This clearly is a unique opportunity to see the Yorktown Lacrosse Community at its best with nearly five decades of players represented throughout the weekend.
This year we have an exciting agenda planned for Charlie Murphy Youth Lacrosse Tournament and Matt Kull Memorial Yorktown High School Alumni Game. See www.yacsports.org for info.
About Charlie Murphy
Charlie Murphy, was a true lacrosse pioneer who helped Yorktown High School grow into one of the nation’s premier hotbeds for the sport. He helped found the Cornhuskers boys team in 1965, and the school has gone on to win six state titles, 28 sectional titles and has produced numerous High School and College All-Americans, Professional and World Team players, and coaches at all levels of play.
And yet, Charlie Murphy never coached a single Yorktown High School lacrosse game!
Instead, Murphy’s love of the sport and generosity helped transform a fledgling grass-roots operation into a nationally recognized high school lacrosse program. He was a positive force on so many young lives that he will always be known endearingly in the Yorktown community as Mr. Murph.
