No goalie was on guard at the net on Friday night at the Solaris Sports Club indoor soccer field. Instead the goalie box became the stage for the Teen Center’s First Friday Café Open Mic Night that is co sponsored with the Justin Veatch Fund.
Organizers of the well attended Open Mics have an added challenge this year as their usual venue, the senior room at the Yorktown Community and Cultural Center is undergoing remodeling. Solaris Sports Club provided space for the teens to perform this month.
“We are taking Open Mic on tour” said Jeffrey Veatch. “November 4th we will be playing at the Café in Club Fit.”
The tour might end there as the organizers have not been able to locate another venue for the teens to perform. “Most places have been too small to accommodate us, while others want to charge us too much” according to Helena Rodriguez of the Yorktown Teen Center. “The teens love to perform and the audience is so respectful and supportive of their peers. It would be sad to not have their show go on.”
The Teen Center is looking for a space that will accommodate about 130 people on December 2, January 6 and February 3.

About the Teen Center: Over the years, hundreds of teens have benefited from programs operating as the Yorktown Teen Center. The YTC has been run at various times by the town, a national youth organization and through the participation of many local volunteers. In June 2009, financial difficulties made it impossible for the national organization to continue supporting the Yorktown site. To fill this new void in the community, the former Advisory Board reorganized as a steering committee (in June 2009) and proceeded to incorporate to become the present Yorktown Teen Center, Inc. (a Not-for-Profit 501c3 charity). Its mission is to provide safe, positive, enriching, fun, supervised programs for teens. The newly organized center was recently described in the North County News as one of “the best and the brightest beacons for the future.”
Yorktown Teen Center is open to middle and high school students that reside in the Yorktown community. For more information about the center or upcoming events visit their website at www.yorktowntc.org or call 914-302-2123.
