The following press release was issued by Westchester County legislative candidate Terrence Murphy’s campaign.
A cadre of women ranging from young professionals to homemakers styling themselves as “Moms for Murphy” marched on main street today, heading to DeVito Park in Yorktown to marshal support for Dr. Terrence Murphy (R, I, C – Yorktown), a candidate for Westchester County Legislator.
The moms of many colors and political persuasions said they have one thing in common: they are concerned about the future direction of Westchester County. Specifically, the profligate tax and spend policies by the Westchester County Board of Legislators including, seven-term incumbent Mike Kaplowitz.
“Mike’s solution to the County’s out-of-control spending was not to find savings, but rather to borrow and raise taxes,” said Robin Glantz-Murphy of Chappaqua, co-chair of Moms for Murphy.
During their rally, the throng of moms highlighted Kaplowitz’s time as budget chairman of the legislature, where property taxes have risen 56%, and spending has increased by 71%.
Yorktown GOP Chairwoman Serafina Mastro took issue with the recent unsubstantiated statements beginning to emanate from the Kaplowitz camp about Murphy’s short tenure on the Yorktown Town Board. She pointed out how Murphy was recently elected after years of mismanagement and in a very short time has successfully cleaned up the town’s ethical lapses, held the line on taxes, and initiated $150 million in new economic development projects.
Mastro feels Dr. Murphy’s leadership is needed now on the county board after fourteen years of mismanagement under Kaplowitz. “As a voter, mother, and grandmother, I do not want Mike Kaplowitz, who voted to increase taxes, increase spending, and voted against protecting children from dangerous sexual predators to continue to jeopardize the future of our county,” Mastro said. “With just three weeks until the election, the Kaplowitz campaign is out of control and, they are again grasping for anything they can use to mislead voters in his most recent run for public office.”
The women said that it is time for a new approach to county government, and have organized to support Dr. Murphy, who as a small business owner and understands the pressures being put on middle class families across Westchester. They say he has the smart, common sense solutions in order to get New Castle, Somers and Yorktown back on the road toward prosperity and provide a promising future for the next generation.
“We are here because we are concerned about the future of Westchester County,” said Caroline Murphy, of Yorktown, co-chair of Moms for Murphy. “All of us have kids growing up in this community and we see Westchester heading down the wrong path. Kids graduating college cannot come start a family here. There are so many moving back home because they cannot afford the cost of living.”
She continued, “The moms here today are not looking at Republican or Democrat but who can we trust to provide a viable future for our children. We believe that person is Dr. Terrence Murphy. This November is Westchester’s time to reinvest in our future. We have had enough of politics as usual and our children can no longer afford it. This November we encourage all Moms and Dads to support Terrence because of his vision for our county.”
