Perhaps it’s because The Tech Center draws students who know what they want to do, but a common thread was evident among the Students of Distinction chosen by their teachers for the second quarter of the school year and honored this week at a ceremony celebrating their achievements.
Over and over again, teachers used words like “strong work ethic,” “passionate,” and “committed,” in describing the 11 honorees at the ceremony held on the campus of Putnam Northern Westchester BOCES, where friends and family gathered. The students, members of the career academies of Tech, either know what they want to study in college, or know what they want to do in the workplace, which is why they chose to get a head start on their dreams by enrolling in Tech.
Business Career Academy student Evelyn Saavedra, from Yorktown, is a perfect example.
“Evelyn has excellent business and computer skills,” said teacher Josephine Scala, “but she goes beyond.” As part of her studies in Retail Services at Tech, Evelyn produces displays at T.J. Maxx and CVS. “She also handles our retail services store here on campus, makes bilingual presentations for our ELL students, and helps the teachers,” said Ms. Scala.
Mia Taylor, a Cosmetology Career Academy student from Mahopac, “leads her peers,” said teacher Pat Gilman. “She’s determined to excel in cosmetology, which she already has, and she has already received college credit for her English Literature class as a senior in high school.”
The Tech students honored for the second quarter of the year are Nicole Corona, Mahopac; Alexis Coletti, Somers; Stephanie Tock, Mahopac; Kelly Chacon, Walter Panas; Mia Taylor, Mahopac; Evelyn Saavedra, Yorktown; Chris Manning, Yorktown; Jaime Aguirre, Ossining; Keven Carelli, John Jay; Oliver Cooperman, Hendrick Hudson; Adam Menken, Brewster.
Following the ceremony, students, family, friends and teachers were treated to a breakfast presented by The Tech Center’s Hospitality Academy.
