Yorktown Heights — Students from the National Technical Honor Society joined forces with Culinary Arts students on the campus of Putnam Northern Westchester BOCES for two days this week to prepare a feast of baked ziti, garden salad, meatballs & garlic toast for 75 guests of the Salvation Army’s soup kitchen in Peekskill.
“I think it’s nice to know that people who are in need of food will get to have this meal,” said Tech Honor Society member and Fashion Design and Merchandising student Nicole Loscri, from Katonah. “We take for granted that we can get fresh food and eat whenever we want.”
“It’s always great to help,” said Culinary Arts student Nick Giordano from Yorktown. “Anything for a good cause!”
Tech National Honor Society member Damian Farias, from North Salem, agreed, and added, “It’s also a lot of fun.”
As the students cleaned vegetables for salad, prepared meat for the ziti, and carefully cleaned up all the scraps into a composting bin, the smell of bacon and eggs was wafting in the air. When asked if that was also going into the ziti, students answered, “No, that’s for us to eat while we’re cooking!”
