News from Ossining on taking home three METRO awards for Aida production:
Ossining High School took home three of high school theater’s most coveted awards last night at the 14th Annual Metropolitan High School Theater Awards at the Paramount Center for the Arts in Peekskill.
Ossining’s production of “Aida” received 10 nominations and walked away with wins for Outstanding Actress in a Leading Role (Mykaela Copeland), Outstanding Chorus and Technical Merit for Stage Manager/Lighting Designer (Jessica Fleischman).
Copeland, who won for her portrayal of the title character in “Aida,” thanked her director and theater teacher, Jessica Beattie, for giving her the opportunity to play “such a dynamic part.”
In an interview prior to the awards ceremony, Copeland, who will be attending SUNY Stony Brook in the fall, said she was most touched by the nomination for Ossining’s chorus. “I know I couldn’t have been as good as I was if it hadn’t been for the work of the chorus supporting me vocally. They were amazing.”
Beattie, who took over the high school drama program last year, said the production had been “a crazy journey that literally took over our lives. But I’m happy that my students are getting the recognition that they deserve.”
Bradley Morrison, Ossining’s director of Cultural Arts, said “We’re really excited for Mykaela and Jessica for their individual awards but even more so for the chorus award because that shows the hard work that all of the kids put into the production.”
In addition to Copeland’s win for Outstanding Lead Actress, the Chorus’ win for Outstanding Chorus and Fleischman’s win for Technical Merit, Ossining’s “Aida” was nominated for the following awards:
Outstanding Actress in a Supporting Role: Paris Beato (Amneris)
