A volunteer committee obtained a grant from Entergy Corp., sold bricks books and coupons and held other fundraisers throughout the past school year, raising more than $20,000 to install a playground at Lakeland’s Benjamin Franklin Elementary School in the town of Yorktown.
The swings were unveiled at the Kamhi Drive school on Thursday, June 21, the second-to-last day of the school year.
Principal Patricia McIlvenny-Moore happily accepted the new swings, which replace ones that were taken down 6 years ago due to age.
Fundraising continues with the goal of installing a new, $70,000 playground. Local corporations are being sought as community partners in that effort. Anyone interested may contact the committee by calling the school at 914-245-7444.
Playground committee members include co-chairwomen Karen Vogelsang-Brown and Doreen Matthews and members Liz Finnegan, Ellen Dolan, Robyn Pearl, Ana Maria Robben and Bibiana Denet.
