Students on the river

Students in Croton have been studying the Hudson River:

As part of the Croton-Harmon School District’s ongoing curriculum dedicated to local environmental sustainability, Pierre Van Cortlandt Middle School students learned about nautical life and sailing aboard the Clearwater sloop, which set sail along the Hudson River earlier this fall.
In addition to sailing, students learned about the different fish that populate the Hudson, conducted water testing and learned how to map a nautical voyage. The Clearwater departed from Cold Spring, N.Y. PVC Assistant Principal Michael Plotkin charted the course using EveryTrail software. The experience was an important step in a school-wide effort to focus students on how they can make a difference in their community.
“Students are gaining a better understanding of their relationship with the Hudson River and their surroundings, including environments outside of Croton,” said Mr. Plotkin, who looks forward to working with students on the revitalization of the school’s garden later this year.
