In response to Westchester County budget cuts to health centers, Open Door Family Medical Centers is hosting a community meeting at 5:30 p.m. tonight at St. Peter’s Church, 19 Smith St., Port Chester.
Open Door posted meeting details on its Facebook page stating that health centers including Open Door, Hudson River Healthcare, Mt. Vernon Neighborhood Health Center and Greenburgh Neighborhood Health Center were cut from the 2013 budget when it passed on Friday. Open Door advocates, they said, were left out of the room during the budget’s passage.
What that means is that the health care safety net in Westchester, which supports 200,000 people, will receive $2.6 million less in 2013, they noted on Facebook. More than $1 million of that figure comes from the state to screen for and treat tuberculosis and sexually transmitted diseases.
The county Health Commissioner, Open Door said, is proposing to set up clinics “to essentially compete with the health centers in order to minimally comply with State mandates.”
“It is worth noting that the County shut down all of its clinics many years ago because they were too expensive to operate; last year they closed the mental health clinics transferring patients to non-profit providers,” they said on Facebook. “They cited the outsourced public private partnership as better for patients and taxpayers alike.”
