Here’s some info about a new support group for cancer patients:
Cortlandt Manor, NY – (January 22, 2013) – Living with cancer is a steep learning curve for most people and many find themselves at a loss on which way to turn after being diagnosed.
With that in mind, Gilda’s Club Westchester, a leader in support for cancer patients and their families, is offering a new support group called “Living with Cancer” to help newly diagnosed patients with emotional and practical support. The program is part of a new
partnership with the Cheryl R. Lindenbaum Cancer Center at Hudson Valley Hospital Center aimed at bringing services to upper Westchester and Putnam residents.
Gilda’s and HVHC are hosting an open house on Feb. 7 at 6 p.m. at the Cheryl R. Lindenbaum Cancer Center at 1978 Crompond Road, Cortlandt Manor for anyone interested in learning more about the group. Refreshments will be served and organizers will answer questions.
“When someone receives a cancer diagnosis it’s a life-changing event, ’’said Miranda Dold, LCSW, Director of Outreach and Program Development for Gilda’s Club Westchester. “It’s important that they receive the support they need to make the transition. ‘Living with Cancer’ is an opportunity for people who are newly diagnosed with cancer to understand that there are others who have made this journey and they are not alone. We invite anyone who is newly diagnosed to attend this open house and find out what our program is all about.’’
Gilda’s Club Westchester, based in White Plains since 2001, provides networking and support groups, workshops, education and social activities in a warm, inviting place where cancer patients can come together to share their experiences. Gilda’s recently announced that it now offers programming to upper Westchester and Putnam residents at Hudson Valley Hospital Center.
In addition to the “Living with Cancer” group, which meets every first and third Thursday of the month, a second support group for the children of those diagnosed with cancer. “Kid 2 Kid” will begin in March. It will offer children ages 5 to 12 a safe, supportive environment to discuss how cancer has affected their lives. The group will meet every third Thursday of the month from 6-7:30 p.m. at HVHC’s Cancer Center. For more information on these programs, call Miranda Dold, LCSW at 914-644-8844.
