News from Assemblywoman Sandy Galef on an upcoming “Dear Sandy” show:
The latest installment of Assemblywoman Sandy Galef’s television program “Dear Sandy” highlights the 200th anniversary of the incorporation of the Village of Ossining. Galef is joined by William Hanauer, Village of Ossining Mayor and John Wunderlich, President of the Ossining Historical Society. Hanauer and Wunderlich discuss with Galef the history of Ossining and the plans to celebrate this anniversary.
“When the board and I started talking about the bicentennial, one of the things we decided is that we want everything to be completely democratic and if possible to involve as many of the immigrant groups as possible,” said Hanauer. The blending of cultures that define Ossining will be evident in the bicentennial celebrations, in everything from the planned commemorative material, fun contests and especially in the historical tours. All of the festivities are being topped off with a weekend long festival, which the mayor describes in detail on the show.
Hanauer and Wunderlich take the viewers on a journey of Ossining’s history, starting at the very beginning, with the Native American Sint Sinck tribe, through its being settled by the Dutch, British, Germans, and eventually even by the Portuguese. Perhaps one of the best known facts about Ossining is that it is home to Sing Sing prison, a place that has always played an important role in Ossining, and at some points in history has been its largest employer. Ossining is rich with history and culture, and the plans for the Bicentennial festivities are sure to show this. Galef said, “I am excited about the upcoming celebrations, and encourage everyone to participate in the festivities.”
