A group of fund-raising youngsters will form a sort of bed pan brigade Saturday, collecting donations for Hudson Valley Hospital Center near the Cortlandt Town Center.
Here’s an announcement of the effort from the hospital center:
Yorktown Leos Use Bedpans to Raise Funds for Hudson Valley Hospital Center Comprehensive Cancer Center Middle and high school students will be out on Route 6 this weekend
Cortlandt Manor, NY – (May 17, 2013) – If you see a bunch of people dressed in hospital gowns carrying bed pans along Route 6 in Cortlandt Manor on Saturday they are not hospital patients who’ve lost their way, but enterprising young fundraisers.
A group of 15-20 students from four middle and high schools in the area will take part in a fundraiser sponsored by the Yorktown Leos on Saturday between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Route 6 in front of the Cortlandt Town Center.
Yorktown Leos adviser Al Avitable said that he got the idea for collecting money in the bed pans from a fundraiser the Leos did last year for the local 911 memorial using fireman’s boots.
“Given that we’re raising money for Hudson Valley Hospital, I thought it would be more appropriate – and funny – to use bedpans,’’ he said. “I’m hoping they just throw money in and nothing else.’’
Avitable said if the fundraiser is a success the Leos might do it every year. He said Yorktown Lions youth group has about 200 members from Yorktown, Walter Panas and Lakeland High Schools, as well as Copper Beech and Mildred Strang Middle Schools. The students have been very busy this spring, he said, working on community service projects almost every weekend. Avitable said that the Leos raised $4,500 for Support Connection, a support group for breast and ovarian cancer, with a concert last weekend. Last year the Leos raised more than $20,000 for various causes, he said.
